Flawless On Page SEO Checklist For Bloggers

On page optimization is a SEO practice that can affect your search engine ranking. So in this post I am going to share a flawless on page SEO checklist that every blogger should follow. But before I begin let me tell you that traditionally SEO has been divided into two categories –On Page SEO and Off Page SEO. On page optimization covers what we can do on the pages of the blog itself, and off page optimization covers activities that takes place elsewhere such as link building and social media promotion. Since both needs to be done differently I thought to write two separate post for on page SEO and off page SEO.

Lets get started with on Page SEO checklist…

Title Tag

For anyone who knows a little about SEO, it goes without saying that title tag is one of the most important on page SEO factor that affects your search engine ranking. The title tag tells search engine what your page is about. So you should always write a descriptive and key-laden title tag.

HTML Code Sample

<title>Your Title Here</title>

Best Formats

  • Keyword with few more words | Brand Name
  • Brand Name | Keyword with few more words

Best Practices

  • Include your primary keyword close to the beginning.
  • Use at least three keyword phrase.
  • Try to keep it less than 66 characters.
  • Use pipes (|) to separate your brand name.
  • Avoid duplicate titles.

Meta Description Tag

Meta description tags are now not that important as it used to be, but still extremely important in gaining high CTR from search engine result pages (SERPs). It should always be descriptive and catchy like an advertisement on which a user would want to click.

HTML Code Sample

<meta name="description" content="Description for the post or page here.">

Best Practices

  • Try to keep it less than 160 characters.
  • Avoid duplicate meta descriptions.
  • To prevent meta descriptions from being cut off use single quotes (‘ ‘) instead of double quotes (” “).
  • Use keyword as it will get highlighted, drawing the user’s eyes to it.

Meta Keywords

Meta keywords were once used to be popular but in July  2009 Google officially announced that they do not consider it in web search ranking. So, go ahead and skip this unless an until you are using keyword rank checker tool like Traffic Travis.

Header Tags

A header tags is an effective way to tell search engines and readers what your page is about. So it’s good to use keywords in header tags but avoid using the same keyword multiple times in header tag.

You can use multiple H2, H3, H4, H5 and H6 tags if there are multiple section but always avoid using more than one H1 tag.

Proper Order in HTML

<h3>Header Text</h3>

Best Practices

  • Use H1 tag once per page/post.
  • Use keyword phrase once in you header tag.
  • Use at least three words in H1 tag.
  • Try to keep H1 tag less than 66 characters. (because sometimes instead of Title tag Google picks H1 tag as page/post title.)
  • Use H2 tags to break your content into section.

Internal Links With Anchor Text

An internal link is one that go from one page to another page on the same domain. It strengthensite navigation, and tells readers and search engines that the page is relevant for the keyword phrase you used as an anchor text. Secondly, it helps you spread the link juice (Page Rank) around your blog.

Best Practices

  • Use keyword phrase to inter-link your pages.
  • Do not add rel=”nofollow” attribute to the link tag.

Images ALT Text

Alt text is meant to be an alternative information source for those who have disabled images in their browser and those user agents who are unable to see images.

If possible you should try to include your targeted keyword phrase in image ALT tag. Because it can make your photos and pictures more discoverable on the web. Here’s a video in which Matt Cuts explains why you should add ALT text in your images.

Vladimir Prelovac has developed a WordPress plugin called ‘SEO Friendly Images‘ that you can use to automatically add image alt attributes.

URL Structure

URL is another place where you can add keyword phrase and help your readers and search engines understand what your page is about. It should always be less than 60 characters so that your keyword is visible in search results. And if you have relevant keyword in URL structure then search engine could give you some priorities.

Best Practices

  • Use no more than Five words.
  • Try to keep it less than 60 characters.
  • Use dashes (-) between the words, rather than underscores ( _ ).
  • Avoid stop words. (a, the, to, is etc.)

Keyword Density Per Page

A common myth about keyword density is if we use keyword many time, we will rank higher in search results. In fact there’s no exact percentage, however 1-3% keyword density along with LSI keywords is considered to be optimum.

Here’s a video where Matt Cutts discusses the ideal of keyword density for a page.

Best Practices

  • Use keyword in the first & last 50-100 words.
  • Bold, underline or italicized your keyword.
  • Use keyword in H1, H2 and H3 tags.
  • Use Keyword in image ALT text.

By the end of this post I would like to remind you that there are hundreds of signals which Google considers for ranking a site/blog. By the way if you like this on page SEO checklist please leave comment.

How To Write An SEO Friendly Post

Being a blogger in this day and age is no easy life. This is due to the fact that aside from the hard-to-please human readers that one wishes to attract to his/her site, a blogger also has to worry about web crawlers. Thus, the industry of Search Engine Optimization was born.

Writing an SEO friendly post today is the key to ensuring an ideal position in the cyber space. Still, most writers fail to understand this very principle and ends up spending more than they originally should. In case you’re on that very boat right now, worry not for you can learn how to do this and save money yourself. The following are some of the most basic principles behind effective SEO writing for your page.

A Few Good Posts Is Better Than A Thousand Spams

Relevance is the name of the game when you’re dealing with search engines. This simply means you have to offer something helpful to the one you’re trying to converse with. The only way to climb up the ranks is by tackling a subject that’s useful to human readers. Think about the topics that you’re going to post on your site and see if they can be of any use to your target audience.

A good technique in figuring out what’s useful to your readers and what’s not is by going back to your site’s niche. It all boils down to the interest of your audience. Know this well and you’ll be able to crack what hooks people and eventually, search engines.

Do Your Homework & Research Effective Keywords

You need to remember that search engines are artificial intelligence that detect and penalize spammers by using the keywords found in an article. Hence, writing thousands of irrelevant content by “keyword stuffing” will not get you anywhere. Always keep in mind that certain words can make or break your post. Utilizing too many of the same keyword could be counterproductive to what you’re trying to achieve. You need to allot ample time in keyword research. Figure out the critical words that will be used by your readers when they are looking for a specific topic and utilize them sparingly.

In addition to that, Google and other search engines usually assumes that the words first used in your article are of greatest importance. Using certain terms in your headings and introductions could help you land a favorable position in a search category.

Feedback Is Important

The comment section of your article is a treasure trove of ideas. You will be able to develop new topics for following posts checking in how people perceive your current work. Just be ready for some people are harsh critics. Take everything as constructively as you can.

Furthermore, replying to comments is vital to promote interaction between you and your readers. Have an open-mind and you will no longer find yourself lacking in the idea department.

Incorporate Links To Your Copy

One of the common mistakes that web writers do today is “forcing” keywords and links into the body of their posts. Search engines have a way of determining whether or not your work is correct in grammar and construction. Thus, doing this very practice is actually placing yourself in a troublesome position.

Instead of doing it the traditional way, try to incorporate the links when you’re writing your copy. The more natural your links are, the better it will be received both by your readers and by search engines.

Images Add Flair To Your Content

As stated above, the only way you could climb up the ranks is by offering something helpful to the Internet. Sometimes people disregard copies that appears boring on the get-go. Needless to say, it also reflects negatively for web crawlers and so, the site is penalized.

You can avoid this yourself by including images to your posts. Just keep in mind that the picture needs to be related to the body of the article. Otherwise, people will find it strange and awkward, preventing you from getting the desired results.

Writing an SEO friendly article is needed by web writers of today in order to set themselves apart from the thousand of irrelevant pages found on the Internet. If you want to get ahead of the curve then you’d best heed these simple yet effective tips!

13 SEO Mistakes That Can Jinx Your Luck

Do you want to keep your SEO store safe from bad luck to this Friday the 13th? Then make sure you stay away from the following 13 sneaky techniques.

Friday the 13th has been mostly associated with freak incidents, superstitions and unexplainable and unfortunate events. But doing your own SEO means you already have felt such freaky things happening round the year. Right from sudden changes in the site’s ranking to a mysteriously updated algorithm SEO does frighten you at times.

Call it luck or a bad luck that search engines these days are smarter and quickly pick up trails of latest SEO ploys resulting in the demoting of websites like anything. So to honour Friday the 13th let us ensure that there is no bad luck that will come to you by using the most common SEO pitfalls.

The following 13 SEO mistakes are the ones that should be totally avoided in all cases:

Ranking solely cannot depict the success rate of SEO

You should not rely on merely the ranking of your website to judge the SEO campaign’s success as it can be quite misleading. Understand that search engines are more personalized these days and Google uses about 200 unique signals in their algorithm to rank sites and keep updating the same. Such factors make it unnerving and thought-provoking to focus solely on your site’s ranking.

So how do you evaluate how successful the SEO is? By looking at the ranking with relation to helpful metrics.

Some metrics that can help evaluate SEO are as follows:

  • Organic Traffic: you will need to measure and ensure that non-paid traffic is on the rise and decreases from major search engines.
  • Organic Revenue: this revenue is generated on the online store if the user accesses the site as a non-branded visit. (a non-branded visit is when someone reaches the site via specific keyword rather than looking for your company name.)
  • Multi-Channel Funnels: This fundamental helps in better understanding of the buying process. This feature can be used to determine how users interact with search engines before they make a purchase. For example, some visitor may visit your site via Google, leave your site for competitor’s sites and later return to make a purchase.
  • Traffic sources: you will need to figure which sites are sending most traffic to your site and which sites are sending the most visitors that do convert into sales.

Don’t depend on just one traffic source

Depending on only one traffic source is a bad bet and a chance you should avoid taking. Instead, look to diversify your traffic sources. Social media platforms, industry directories and advertising sources like Ad Words can help in SEO when it comes to targeted traffic. Once these different sources are incorporated in the marketing do make sure that you track what sources are leading to the most traffic and sales.

Limit optimization of incoming links with keyword rich anchor text

Sometimes adding more than required can be a bad thing especially when it is about optimizing the anchor text that leads to your site. Try to add fresh ideas and variety into the linking strategy especially when it comes to press releases. For example, for a site that sells DVDs online has five sites linked to it all links shouldn’t simple say “Buy Online DVDs”. This can even violate Google’s Webmaster Guidelines and you will be left out of favour in terms of SEO.

Have interesting content on the website

Hook the incoming visitors for longer times and return to them by updating the website with rich content that contains interesting copies, useful videos, amazing photos (which can be utilized further with the Alt attribute tag), podcasts and other such media. It is even likely that they will reference your site, keep linked to your content and trust your brand.

Additionally amazing content may help capture “informational searchers”, which means people who keep looking for information instead of making a purchase. When there is quality content that engages them at a high rate means your business is seen as an expertise one.

Don’t keep duplicate content

Google doesn’t like to see the same thing popping up twice (or more than once). Ensure that the content doesn’t have multiple copies that are in hiding somewhere in the website. This even includes having duplicate web copy, title tags, Meta descriptions and URLs.

Log in to your Google Webmaster Tools account to check for duplicate content using Search Appearance> HTML improvements. To resolve duplicate content and URL issues a canonical Meta tag can be added too.

Take Google Analytics seriously

Google Analytics can be one of the most helpful tools that can be used to judge how well your SEO campaign is performing. Apart from all the necessary basic metrics it also has e-commerce tracking scripts which allows store owners to figure out how much revenue is generated from organic traffic. In this way you can determine if the organic traffic is converted well and can point out pages that might need some additional optimization.

Don’t give easy accessibility of your site to unfriendly SEO URLs

Keyword rich URLs were very important once upon a time but search engines no longer pay much attention to them lately. But the URLs can still play a role by enhancing the relevance of the page. If you are looking to optimize your URL don’t forget to add 301 redirects for older URLs to 301 to the newly optimized URLs. (For Volusion store owners this happens automatically.)

Don’t avoid Google+ and authorship

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Google lets Google+ influence search results strongly. Utilize this knowledge by creating and building credibility through a personal Google+ profile and tying it to your content with Google authorship.

Some advantages of Google+ authorship are:

  • Help followers, potential customers and fans find sites where active publication of content takes place.
  • To search and network with other authors in your industry for more business opportunities.
  • Increasing fan base by using the Hash tags on Google+. For example, someone looking into SEO can click on the #seo Hash tag in Google+ and they will be displayed with other content tagged under #seo.
  • Increasing the content’s visibility in comparison to your competitors on Google. Google gives priority to high quality content that is tied up to a credible Google+ account increasing the visibility of the site and boost potential traffic.

Avoid purchasing or acquiring spammy links

Google is getting better day by day when it comes to detecting spam and if you are caught associated with such a spammy domain the penalty is quite much. Such sites that are linked to spam will perform worse than they did before and in worst cases may completely disappear from Google’s search results.

So the question is what kind of sites should you look for earning links to your domain? Sites that follow strict editorial guidelines, sites that have easy access for contacting the webmaster and sites which carry relevant content pertaining to your industry are the most likely ones to look for and reach out.

Target different keywords on multiple pages

Keyword research is a tricky business and it is a good idea to target different keywords across your website. It may so happen that upon using same keywords on multiple pages can cause internal page competition resulting in duplication which can put a hole in the websites SEO growth.

To avoid such mistakes ensure that you have three to five unique keywords that can be used to optimize per page. Extra more keywords than that can risk the dilution of the page’s relevance.

Don’t settle with the manufacturer’s product description

Don’t depend on just the manufacturer’s product description especially when you can write a unique one. This originality in the product description can make your site stand out and increase online visibility. It will also set your product apart from competition and give an added opportunity to play around with variable keywords as well.

When penning down the unique product description employ useful content, videos and charts. Additional audio and visual content can help build a better business by engaging your customers furthermore.

Don’t sell the same product on duplicate sites

When it comes to online stores that sell the exact same product owned by you will not serve you well. This is a practice some webmasters may employ to build link network and boost the relevance of the site. Remember the point about what happens to a site when there are duplicate contents of the same? Sites that sell the same product may face worse issues than the former.

Penalties for such sites are quite heavy and it may even take months for your site to recover. Instead look to develop business and building the SEO value of one store which sells a particular set of goods. For multiple stores owned by you make sure that each site has a unique niche set of products sold under it.

Do remember to revisit the SEO efforts

SEO comes with efforts that need a long time investment. This means that at brief intervals you should review and revisit your strategy and find ways to improve to achieve better SEO goals.

Keep a tab on your SEO efforts by checking KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) on regular basis. KPIs include all the goals that you need to achieve with the SEO efforts undertaken by you. For example, a KPI can be about increasing revenue from non-branded organic traffic. You can use Google Analytics to set up reports and alerts for the items you wish to track on a regular basis. If you have your own SEO team or looking for one go for transparency in the form of useful performance reports.

By avoiding these 13 dreadful mistakes you can boost your store’s site to success. Additionally it is important that the bad SEO tactics be pointed and exposed out. If you know of any more SEO mistakes that can be harmful and people should be aware of please share them down in the comments below.

Video Infographics for SEO and Traffic Generation

Let us admit it, reading article after article just to get the information you need is tiresome. Some writers do not even read the whole piece, instead they scan it for the important points that matter, and so does your website visitors. If that is the case, how will you be able to attract your visitors and gain the amount of traffic you need?

Simple, use the power combo of images and videos. It is common knowledge that people love information presented in a visually appealing way, which is why infographics attract more readers. On the other hand, videos capture more interest because it does not require much effort and they are most often entertaining. Just look at how successful YouTube is with all its viral videos and Pinterest with its photo pin boards. Combine both and you will have a killer content that will propel your traffic up and up.

Now that you know what is effective in luring people to a website and making them stay longer (for healthy bounce rates), let us tackle this not so explored path to content marketing that involves two types of goody eye-charmers, video and images – video infographics.

What is an infographic?

It is a graphical visual representation of data and information. It is mostly composed of graphs, flowcharts and maps for statistical data. In social media, it is often used to present user statistics and success stories. In fact, most of social media infographics show demographics, information flow, and behavioral patterns that create a vivid idea on the core of the data. Simply put, it’s like putting the boring aspects of statistics and history into an effective and highly entertaining media format.

Video + Infographic = Heightened engagement level

A video that is intentionally for marketing and is no doubt a sales pitch often is neglected due to many factors. It might be because of the speaker in the video (unappealing or annoying to the eardrums) or it could be that the video is not worth 5 seconds of people’s time because it spouts nonsense.

But when you mix video and infographic, the impact would definitely be big. People would not turn away from a great artful presentation dished in a friendlier online media, provided that the content is also relevant.

How can this help a website’s SEO or generate traffic?

It is not the one and only way to gain traffic, although optimizing the website through video infographics follow the same SEO best practices such as:

  1. Keyword research (Google suggest, YouTube keyword tool, etc.)
  2. Keyword placements (titles, description, tags)
  3. Annotations for CTAs (Call to Actions)
  4. Closed Captions (text displayed to represent a video’s dialogue)Social sharing for back links

The methods of lead or traffic generation are not new. It is the content and the types of media that one should focus on because they are the elements that make people click to the source of the content (website or YouTube channel).

It’s not necessary to create a new infographic to apply this strategy. If you already have an infographic that is still true and useful today, you can re-purpose it and turn it into a video infographic your users will enjoy. However, it is still best to create fresh content that is up to date and targeted to your specific market.

If you are not yet confident in making an infographic, you can sign up for free infographic templates, apply your stats or whatever contents you have, and present it in a video format.

BlueHost vs HostGator: Who is the Best Web Hosting Provider?

Just as selecting the perfect piece of land is important to building a house, so is picking the right web hosting provider important to establishing your website or blog.

The hosting company determines everything in your site, from speed of page load to data storage and security. Without any doubt, two of the most respected and trusted web hosting providers in the world are Bluehost and Hostagtor.

So, who’s the best web hosting provider?

With a huge variety of potential hosts, all preaching the same benefits, it may be very difficult to decide on which to use. Thus to make things easier for you, here is a comprehensive yet simplified Bluehost vs Hostgator analysis.

Price & Plans

Pricing structures for both the Bluehost and Hostgator are quite simple. The Hostgator shared hosting plans begins at around $4.69/mo and goes up to $14.96/mo. Their reseller web hosting plans begins at $24.96/mo and goes up to $99.96/mo. And finally, their dedicated server starts at around $174.50/mo and can go up to $375/mo.

On the other hand, Bluehost basically offers one plan which is shared hosting. This web hosting plan comes with a commitment of 1 year. Just like Hostgator, Bluehost also offers unlimited features on almost everything. What you’ll pay for each web hosting company.

As the companies and businesses work it out on their marketing strategy, each of them offer the exact price for a period of 1 year of hosting. That is only if you make it to 1 year (365 days).

Basically, Hostgator offers a plan that is more flexible and that is why they are always in a position to convert a lot of people. In addition, Hostgator is the cheapest alternative in the long run.

In the end, the Hostator takes the credit for the affordable pricing options.

Performance & Reliability

It is hard to compare Bluehost vs Hostgator when it comes to performance and reliability because both web hosting provider score high in these aspects. This is probably because they both have high quality and the latest network infrastructure and server hardware.

This helps them ensure fast speed and prevent your site from becoming a headache for users and visitors.

Customer Support

Both Hostgator and BlueHost, provide excellent customer service for clients with the options of live chat, email and phone. This is important in order to ensure that problematic issues on your site are quickly resolved before they become a frustration to your visitors.

The truth of the matter is that Bluehost knows their stuff very well but they can be very rude if the type of question does not fall within their field of support. Their online support like email as well as ticket questioning may be a nightmare since there are a lot of options.

Overall, both the companies provide satisfactory customer service but Hostgator service is a bit higher because of their excellent live support customer service system where you can ask from advanced to more basic questions.

Winner – HostGator or BlueHost?

Of course, that will have to go to Hostgator. The optional plans they offer ensure that you pay only for what you use and that is very beneficial for beginners. The live support excellence is also a strong point, to help you fast, in case of emergencies.

Moreover, this blog is hosted on HostGator and so far I’ve not faced any issue with them.

How To Use Blogging Techniques Effectively

No matter how dynamic things get on the internet with constantly revised algorithms, upsurge in the social media, and marketing strategies being ever modified, blogging is but one dominant and guaranteed way to drive traffic to your website and landing pages. When done on WordPress, Blogspot, Weebly or any such platform, blogging proves to be among the simplest ways, along with giving you complete control, to augment your content marketing success. You can use your blog as the most effective and valuable marketing tools if you follow the below given techniques diligently.

Think Through The Ideal Topic To Write On

  • All famous blogs have a finger on the pulse of the readers as far as trends, latest news, and popular taste is concerned. Keep abreast of all of these by visiting the blogs and websites of your industry competitors.
  • Successful blogs are more informative and less promotional. Readers care for call-to-action and are more likely to like and share a blog that they think others will enjoy reading.
  • More than informing, effective blogs entertain. So ditch the formal language and essay-like copies and give them an entertaining read.
  • Successful blogs endure for a long, long time to come.

Selecting a topic to write about that will work is a difficult job; but you can work your way through this process using other strategies. The headline of a blog post is the most important part since that will get people’s attention first. Much like headlines of a publication if readers don’t find the title interesting they won’t bother reading the post. And since it will be the title that will be visible all over the internet, choose your words carefully and make sure the title is not long or random. And then, Google Search Algorithm will take out and analyze the blog title so make sure to put in one of your keywords or phrases in the title.

Maintain Restraint On Your Keywords

Many times, bloggers base their subject and content on a keyword. But it may prove detrimental to the blog if your writing is desperately promotional, something an effective blogging technique would oppose. Having said that, you can still safely include your brand name and contact info in the blog if you make it a point to keep it minimal.

When it comes to keywords, there are other phrases used in SEO and marketing that can be used to make your blog show up favorably in the search results. If you’re still unsure about the use of keywords, engage professional marketing help to prevent Google from discrediting your site for the overusing SEO.

It would go a long way for you if you get very good at identifying keywords for your blog. This will ensure increased traffic to your blog of the target audience that is actually interested in buying your product. Of course, it is a bit difficult to strike a balance between engaging and well-optimized content but if you have a skillful writer then he will know the trick like the back of his hand. And if you are the writer of the blog yourself then get acquainted with keywords, ways to do the research, and use them effectively in your blog.

Incorporating Videos Into The Blog

If you optimize them meticulously, videos prove to be not just an effective way to reach your readers but they also rank quite high in search engines. So it will work in your favor if embed videos into your blog and site not just for SEO but to communicate more effectively with your site visitors and to break up your content strategy. But, if you intend to use videos to connect with your readers globally then remember that third party video sites like YouTube and Hulu are restricted in some countries so your video will be blank. You can relay the videos to those subscribers if you can use an open source player.

More Quality, Less Quantity

Of all the blogging techniques you will ever read about, giving importance to how good your content is instead of how many you publish is something you will find most valuable. An overenthusiastic bloggers will churn out content like there is no tomorrow in order to get more awareness and social shares to their blog, and to reinforce their marketing campaign. But, it’s a myth that this strategy works. Instead, you must think through the blog and write something that would interest you as a reader and you would be proud to share. An effective strategy is to work out a publishing schedule and publish a post once in a few days so that your quality does not suffer. Also, always check the facts, edit and eliminate grammatical and spelling mistakes as readers detest such a thing because it makes your blog seem careless.

Sharing On Social Media

When you have published your blog post, hunt for readers by sharing the post on Twitter, Google+, Facebook, etc since these platforms have easy widgets for sharing posts. Make this a regular habit and after sharing, recheck your posts and determine which ones were more successful and which were not.

Blog Some More

All popular blogs can easily get a discussion going between your social media followers. Whenever you see a conversation happening in the comments you can consider writing a more elaborate post on the topic and even take your readers’ suggestions about what they’d want to read about.

Share Your Blog Again In Future

Maintain a list of all the topics you have written about on your blog. You can share them again at a later point and use it to your advantage when an industry changes and people search for related blogs. Determining the most effective blogging technique for your own marketing campaign will be very useful.

Build Your Own Network In The Blogosphere

Having your own network of bloggers is as important as publishing a great blog because being involved in the blogosphere has tremendous professional benefits. Other than these benefits, you will gain business associates as well as friends through blogging. You can build your network and increase your following by posting on Facebook and Twitter and writing guest posts for other bloggers.

If you cannot decide where you can start when it comes to blogging, then invite other bloggers to write guest posts on your blog. One thing may lead to another and you will reap many benefits such as starting a great networking relationship, give a fresh perspective to your readers, and get new ideas that you didn’t think of. You may also be able to find out the best clientele for you and also the right set of keywords to target them. You must be more proactive and make friends with the key players in the blogging world.
